Man, what a sad newsfeed to wake up on to :(
Gave me a chance to read up on his achievements though, and he just seems like he was a complete beast of a man. Not only did he always consider himself a gamer first and a business man second, but he was one of the few CEOs of a gaming company to actually have worked with what he sold.
Compressing the data for Pokemon Gold/Silver so that it could fit not only the Johto region on the 2mb cartridge but also most of the Kanto region. Not only did he compress it but also wrote the compression algorithm and implemented decompression to the game and made it run as well as previous games on the same software with no compression.
Not to mention almost single-handedly ported the Pokemon battle system from GameBoy to N64 for Pokemon Stadium in like 11 days without any reference manuals so he had to reverse engineer the whole thing. (he'd largely be copying/porting the logic from the GameBoy games but as the chips are totally different architectures to my knowledge that's still bloody impressive.)
Worked as a producer on EarthBound but also scrapped all the original Earthbound code and rewrote the entire game from scratch just to get a working product. He also wrote a scripting system to easily make all the cut scenes and the text in dialogue boxes.
Debugged Super Smash Bros: Melee by himself in only a week's time.
He oversaw every GameCube game ever made by Nintendo.
And he took a huge paycut when the Wii U did poorly so that not a single Nintendo employee would lose his job over it.
"On my business card, I am a corporate president. In my mind, I am a game developer. But in my heart, I am a gamer." -Iwata, GDC 2005
"Games exist for one reason: Fun. Fun for everyone." -Iwata
And for the world to lose him at only 55 is a great tragedy not only for the world of gaming but for humanity as a whole. We're left the poorer in our loss.
Most of this was taken from /r/PCMasterRace so credits to the guys and girls over there.

Lieber Iwata, ruhe in Frieden.
