SAN FRANCISCO, May 23, 2005 – 1UP.com, Ziff Davis Media Game Group’s online community for gaming enthusiasts, announced the 1UP.com Awards for the best video and PC games of the 2005 Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3). The editors of the industry’s leading publications Electronic Gaming Monthly, Computer Gaming World, Official U.S. PlayStation Magazine and 1UP.com voted for their top choices in 21 categories including Most Original Game, Best Game Trailer, and Game of the Show.
New categories this year included Best Xbox 360 Game and Best Sony PSP (PlayStation Portable) Game. The editors presented the awards on the show floor, and the winners were featured in the E3 Show Daily, the official news magazine for E3 written by the editors of Ziff Davis Media Game Group.
Nintendo’s Legend of Zelda took top honors with the Game of the Show award. The award for Microsoft’s newly announced Xbox 360 went to the company’s own Gears of War. Handheld games SOCOM: Fireteam Bravo by Sony Computer Entertainment of America and Mario Kart DS by Nintendo won awards in the new categories for Sony PSP and Nintendo DS (Dual Screen). Nintendo’s Electroplankton, an interactive artistic application for Nintendo DS, won the award for Most Original Game. The editors’ favorite trailer was for Konami’s Metal Gear Solid 4.
“Game developers proved that even in a year dominated by new console announcements, the game makers can still release titles worthy of serious attention,” said Sam Kennedy, Editor-in-Chief of 1UP.com. “We saw incredible games on every platform this year, including the new handheld Sony PSP and Nintendo DS as well as the just-announced Microsoft Xbox 360. We congratulate all of the nominees and winners on their outstanding efforts.”

· Best Action Game: Starcraft: Ghost – Blizzard

· Best Fighting Game: Soul Caliber III – Namco
· Best Racing Game: Burnout Revenge – Electronic Arts
· Best RPG (Role-Playing Game): Dragon Quest VIII – Square Enix
· Best FPS (First-Person Shooter): Black – Electronic Arts
· Best Simulation Game: Nintendogs – Nintendo
· Best Sports Game: Madden NFL 2006 – EA Sports
· Best Strategy Game: Star Wars: Empire at War – LucasArts
