You are Nightmare. Once Siegfried Schtauffen, the leader of a band of brigands, you accidentally happened upon the dead body of Cervantes, the dread pirate. Noticing a huge sword that radiated power clutched in the corpse's dead fist, you approached, your curiosity piqued. The body came to life and attacked. After a long duel, you bested the unholy sword, only to have your own blade shattered in the process. Believing it a prize of your victory, you took the Soul Edge as your new weapon, not knowing that the blade had chosen you for its new pawn. By convincing you that you could resurrect your dead father, who you unintentionally murdered as a child, by providing the sword with the souls of the fallen he slayed, the Soul Edge grew in power, until it took control of you entirely. You became Nightmare, a twisted slave of the weapon who massacred without thought, only seeking to further the Soul Edge's strength. The will of the unholy relic forced you to embark on a search for the fragments that had broken off upon your defeat by Maxi, Kilik, and Xianghua, but you remained aware, waiting for your chance to throw off its control and return to your previous form. While you remain afflicted by guilt in your troubled heart, you want nothing more than to atone for your sins, regain your dignity, and salvage what remains of your fragile sanity.
