Haven’t posted on the blog in the while - been working on a lot of client flash games but had some interesting news and thought I’d share with you.
One of our readers who claims to work for Adobe/Macromedia sent me an email and had this to say about PSP (and some interesting PS2 news too):
“Sony are prepping our new mobile ‘Flash Lite’ platform for PSP and PS3. They intend to combat XBox Live Arcade with downloadable flash games to your PS3 and PSP. They understand the potential of Flash Lite since the development costs are low and we have a DRM solution in place so online content delivery is taken care of.
Got some PS2 info if you’re interested too. Sony intend to make it their ‘Revolution Killer’. They’re working on tieing in Eyetoy and some kind of controller similar to the Revolution controller. With a 100M+ userbase, tens of thousands of mature and documented dev kits and the very low cost of producing Rev style games on the PS2 platform they’re expecting to mobilise another 50M units over the next 5 years precipitated by a $99 price point in 2007.”
From the looks of it Sony are intent on keeping the PS2 alive for some time to come. They’ve got some blockbuster titles coming in 2006/2007 - GT4 online, God of War 2, FFXII, GTA:LCS and obviously unannounced titles. This would also go some way to explain why they’re keeping quiet on the PS3 front - they want to keep pushing the PS2/PSP platform as a viable proposition for low cost, mass market development.
