The Octopath Traveler games paved the way, Dragon Quest followed suit, and now Final Fantasy is next. This refers to Square Enix's “HD-2D” style, and Final Fantasy Resonance will be the first game in the Final Fantasy series to feature it.
Not only does the look blend the old with the new, but Square Enix also aims to combine both in gameplay. Using so-called Visions, iconic Final Fantasy characters are summoned for support and can use their unique abilities in battle.

Final Fantasy Resonance is slated for release on October 22, 2026, for Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC. Pre-orders are already available.
